CapybaRun

A hypercasual endless runner where you play as a capybara

Role:
Project Lead

solo programmer

This was the first project I made for WebGL and mobile. It was also the first game jam where I was a solo programmer.

During this time was still unfamiliar with project management but through this project, I realized the importance of scoping and how to scope that project by using lists. This project also had me apprenticing a junior of mine who haven't even started game development yet, guiding him through his first ever game and game jam. Through I learned how to communicate with an artist and how to give instructions and learned from that communication.

Game Jam Theme:
Hyper-casual, Exploration, WebGL, Mobile Game

Systems created:
Randomized position game objects on top of another randomized positional game objects

What I've learned:
I've learned more about how to use Unity as a whole but more specifically how to use the animations, instantiate and also source control
Animations

I've learned about how I don't need to force myself to use animation states in the animation tree and just use pure code to control my animations in smaller projects or if my animations on a game objects are very simple.
- Instantiate

I found out how to manipulate variables of game objects that are going to be instantiated. This allows me to create procedural or randomized variables for more variations of a single game object.
- Source Control
Source Control was the biggest problem on my previous project. Learning how to use this was not only important to implement code together with other programmers, but also important for designers to tweak variables and use the tools programmers made. I've learned how clashes happen and how to prevent them through organization of who uses what and also try to organize my files better so files can be more organize and easier to be use for other developers.

Developer's notes
This game was made in 48 hours along side with 2 other developers, the designer, Ngoo Kai Xiang, and the artist, Wilson Chong. Although having joined other Game Jams, I would consider this my first successful game made on a game jam even though having some issues submitting to the jam.
I've learned a lot during the game jam and was thankful to have a chance to see what a physically held game jam is like. Will gladly join one again if I get to do so.
